In Studio

As an artist, Majella’s natural habitat is in painting. She mostly works with oils on canvas in her studio on Sherkin Island.

This is to bely the fact that much of the work for her paintings happens long before Majella reaches the studio. In the body of work Crossings, below, the work began with a year of videos, depicting her husband and herself travelling between the island and the mainland by a tiny boat, which resulted in these extraordinary oil paintings.

Interestingly, while the art studio is perched on the shores of the Wild Atlantic, she paints with her back to the views, wholly absorbed in the emotion and memory being expressed on the canvas.
